The journalism fraternity in Uganda has been angered by remarks attributed to parliament’s director of information.
Chris Obore is reported to have told NBS TV that journalists who are insisting on covering parliament are only doing so in order to get freebies from MPs.
“Many of the journalists insisting to cover Parliament are only seeking to associate with MPs to get transport. I feel angry that today, our profession (journalism) has been reduced to potato growing. Everyone is a journalist,” The Monitor quotes Obore.
Obore a former journalist who took up the job of parliament’s communication director recently blocked journalists who don’t have degrees from covering parliament.
Prominent among those who were denied accreditation is the President of Uganda Parliamentary Association-UPPA and NTV reporter Agness Nandutu.
This has however not gone well with the journalism fraternity who argue it should be left to the newsroom to decide who covers the parliamentary beat.
